One Word 365

Has this One Word 365 idea crossed your path yet this year? It has been making the rounds on my social media accounts and the simple complexity of it has me intrigued. I don’t know if I’ll be able to stick with it the entire year but, if I don’t at least I only failed at one goal for the year and not a whole giant list of New Year’s Resolutions, right?

After some major contemplation, I’ve decided my word for the year will be “venturesome”. Sure, it’s not the most roll-of-your-tongue word, but it is the word that best expresses my goals for the coming year.

: willing to take risks

: involving risk

: inclined to court or incur risk or danger

: daring

There are lots of words I would use to describe myself but daring risk taker would never be among them. My husband calls me the Safety Commissioner. My family jokes that my life motto is “safety first, last and always”. I wear my life vest on all water crafts no matter the depth of water. I have never been on a roller coaster. So no, I am not bold, daring, adventurous, risk-taking or fond of adrenaline rushes.

But, the times in life I’ve ended up taking some kind of risk, it was (eventually) a wonderful time and a great memory (I’m looking at you white water rafting trip I almost backed out of right there on the river bank). So this isn’t about being reckless or careless. It isn’t about taking unnecessary risks or unnecessarily courting danger. It’s about being more open to adventure. It’s about embracing the unknown and the unplanned. It’s about trying new things. It’s about letting go of some of my control issues. It’s about just trying something without over thinking it, analyzing it and worrying myself crazy over it first.

Look out 2014, I’m about to embrace my venturous side!

  1. Oh, I’d forgotten I was going to do this! Thanks for the reminder. Love your word and all that it implies. I too would be on that riverbank wondering why I was there! :) My word for the year is going to be “breathe” as in step back and slow down.
